1-2-3

Nothing is a simple as 1-2-3, but when it comes to categorizing the environmental impacts of participant sporting events, there are three big buckets to look at:

  1. transportation
  2. equipment & materials
  3. waste

There isn’t an event in the world that couldn’t improve their environmental best practices by systematically analyzing and addressing these three areas.

From athlete transportation to and from the event, to the shipping of t-shirts and race supplies, to the vehicles used on race day, there are myriad transportation impacts that can be mitigated with foresight and planning. The same can be said of the materials and equipment that are commonly used in event production. Waste management, from on-site recycling to composting, is probably the one area people think about most often, but it, too, is an event component that can benefit from foresight and planning.

What’s my point? Much as Lee and I would like your business. There’s a lot the savvy event director can do on his or her own to significantly lessen the environmental impact of any and every participant sporting event.

To borrow a phrase from my former employer: just do it.
